Automation

Automation skills are becoming fundamental to many traditional occupations. This Customizable Solution creates a certificate program for Automation and Control Systems Specialists that install, operate, and maintain Internet connected devices. . The number of commercial/ industrial devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) is growing at a 20% Compound Annual Growth Rate worldwide, and the labor market supply/demand gap is significant across multiple sectors.

HVACR

The California Energy Commission estimates that up to 50% of new and up to 85% of replacement HVACR systems are not installed and maintained to a quality level of specification. Workforce opportunities abound for addressing the gaps in HVACR quality installation and maintenance, with one national study predicting a quadrupling of the HVACR workforce by 2020. In just four Southern California counties, this initiative will close an annual supply gap of over 600 HVACR technicians and nearly 2,000 in related occupations. Industry participation ensures that educators are well-informed of employer needs.

Advanced Lighting Technology

California commercial buildings consume approximately 31,000 GWh annually for lighting. Building owners often look to energy-efficient lighting retrofits as a means to reduce this usage. However, routine maintenance, repair and retro-commissioning of existing lighting controls systems may provide a much greater opportunity for energy savings. Proper training is necessary to ensure the maintenance, repairs and basic retrofits are completed according to best practices, achieving maximum energy savings and return on investment without compromising lighting quality and efficacy.

Sustainability

Sustainability includes the detailed analysis of building materials, building envelope, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, natural and electrical lighting, acoustic, indoor air quality, passive strategies, fire protection, and renewable energies in buildings. It is the architectural-engineering-construction technology discipline that concerns itself with energy efficiency responses to naturally occurring physical phenomenon such as weather and subterranean conditions; materials, physics, chemistry and biology that impact building performance over time; and human physiology, such as comfort and sensory reaction, energy consumption, environmental control-ability, building maintenance considerations, longevity and sustainability.
